Cape Breton Highlands Links is an 18-hole, par 72 course that dates back to the late 1930s when golf course architect Stanley Thompson was hired to design a mountains and ocean course. The course was to be built in the Cape Breton Highlands National Park, providing an amazing scenic landscape for Thompson to work with. It’s located in the northeast corner of Cape Breton Island, so it’s a bit of a trek, but it’s definitely worth the trip. The holes all have unique, Scottish-inspired names, such as Mucklemouth Meg, Lochan, Canny Slap, and Killicrankie, which honours the Scottish heritage of the community of the region. The course is well-maintained, and the views are fantastic, with some holes looking out over the oceans and others offering views of the mountains. It’s been seamlessly woven into the wilderness of the National Park, so you’re likely to spot some wildlife during your time on the course.
The course has received many recognitions over the years, including ranking in the top 10 courses in Canada from SCOREGolf, Golf Digest and Canadian Golf Magazine, just to name a few. Stanley’s Sunset Grill is their on-site restaurant, serving up classic pub fare, and you’ll also find a full-service pro shop with quality gear. For practice facilities, Cape Breton Highlands Links has both chipping and putting areas to warm up.
