Bigwin Island

For a luxury and private golf experience to remember, Bigwin Island in Muskoka takes the cake. It’s set within the private islands of Lake of Bays, and has been consistently rated as one of the top 20 courses in Canada. The only way to get there is by boat, but it’s only about a 5-minute ride out to the island. The 18-hole par 72 course measures a whopping 7,166 yards from the back tees but only 5,346 from the front tees so it’s still playable for all skill levels. The course was originally designed by Stanley Thompson, but later abandoned. Doug Carrick came in to pick up the pieces in 2001 and reinvented the design to create the world-class private course you see today. It features wide fairways, bold bunkers and tabletop greens, but overall, the course is rather forgiving.

Being so isolated on Bigwin Island gives you an entirely different golf experience away from the outside world. The island has everything you need, including accommodation options at their luxury cabins that are just steps away from the course. There are also three places to dine: The Marine Dining Room, serving classic, contemporary cuisine, the Dockside Lounge, for casual dining on a deck looking over Lake of Bays, and The Halfway House, providing quick bites during your gameplay. Although it is a private golf club, the course is open to public golf enthusiasts during the Spring and Fall shoulder seasons, giving everyone a chance to experience this one-of-a-kind golf course.
