London, Ontario might not be the first place that comes to mind when you think of Canadian golf destinations. But the area offers some fantastic golf courses at even more fantastic price points. You don’t need to travel far to play a healthy mix of recreational and challenging courses. London is definitely a sports town, and its golf courses don’t disappoint. Here are some of the best golf courses in London, Ontario.
firerock golf club
Firerock Golf Club is a public golf course that opened in 2004 and was designed by architect Thomas McBroom. It boasts an 18-hole, par-72 championship-designed course. Starting from an elevated tee, you’ll get beautiful views over the Oxbow River Valley, with the first two holes featuring water hazards from the Oxbow River and a manmade lake.
All the holes are framed by black maple trees and thick, natural grasses, with many of the holes interweaving with canyons of old gravel spoils, adding an extra challenge. The golf club also has a public driving range and a restaurant on-site called The Firerock Pub, where you can grab a bite to eat after you finish your game.
tarandowah golfers club
Tarandowah Golfers Club was created and designed by Martin Hawtree, using inspiration from the links-style courses of Ireland and Scotland. It’s one of only four courses in North America designed by Hawtree and was built on 163 acres of an old farm. Considering the quality of the course, it’s incredibly good value, especially since it’s been rated the #40 public golf course in Canada. It’s located about a half an hour’s drive southeast of London, Ontario.
Tarandowah is notorious for being windy because of the links-style design. So, get ready for some strategic gameplay on this course. That’s on top of its pot bunkers and fairways bordered with fescue grasses. The club also has a driving range, putting green and a pitching/chipping area.
echo valley golf club
Echo Valley Golf Club is located just outside London, Ontario and was originally built in 1971. In 2005, a redesign was completed by Canadian golf architect Rene Muylaert to bring it up to a modern standard. The 18-hole, par-71 course is separated into two main sections, “the upper” and “the valley.” The fairways are rolling, with beautiful views, especially in the valley.
There are four sets of tees on the course, so it’s appropriate for all skill levels, offering a challenge for low handicappers without being too intimidating for newer players. Echo Valley Golf Club is available to host charity or community tournaments and also has multiple practice facilities to hone your skills (driving range, putting greens and chipping area). Golf carts are equipped with GPS, making it easy to navigate the course, even if it’s your first time.
